INSTITUTE FOR DOCTORAL STUDIES IN THE VISUAL ARTS

Residencies
IDSVA's unique approach has helped me tap a cognitive capacity I never knew I had,
a process that is expanding not only my artistic philosophies,
but also my vision towards life.
~ Pragati Chaudhry

IDSVA’s pioneering curriculum---fusing distance learning with intensive residencies---allows working art professionals to pursue rigorous advanced scholarship without having to interrupt or abandon their teaching career, studio practice, or other professional responsibilities:
  • First year students attend a three-week residency intensive in Europe from late-May to mid-June, and the one-week New York Residency in early-January;
  • Second year students attend a two-week residency intensive in Europe from early-June to mid-June, and the one-week New York Residency in early-January;
  • Third year students attend a two-week dissertation residency in Providence, Rhode Island, on the campus of Brown University, from mid-July to late-July.
             Visiting Lecturers Summer 2010

Spannocchia
The semester begins with an eighteen day residency, held in Italy at Castello di Spannocchia, a centuries-old Tuscan castle and organic farm that offers ideal conditions for retreat-like academic study. The Spannocchia residency includes special assignments to Siena, Florence and Milan. May 25 - June 11, 2010. www.spannocchia.org

Paris
Students travel from Spannocchia to Paris, to study in museums and at art sites. Seminar presentations on current exhibitions and special topics inform the wider discussion. June 11 - 16, 2010.

New York
A six-day on-site symposium (January 4 - 9, 2010), during which students present panel papers on independent study topics. This residency includes visits to museums and galleries, scheduled talks with curators, critics, and artists. The Second Annual Harlem Symposium, Art, Ethnicity, and Globalization was held Jan 7 - 8, 2010 at various locations.

Venice
A five-day residency during the Venice Biennale, including study of exhibitions and installations as well as work and discussion with participating artists and curators. The next visit to the Venice Biennale will be June 2011.

Providence, Rhode Island
Third-year students do not participate in the European summer intensive or the New York Intensive. Instead they attend a two-week dissertation orientation in Providence, Rhode Island, hosted on the campus of Brown University, July 18 - 31, 2010. Paul Armstrong, former dean of Brown, leads the orientation.
